July 4th Call to Action for Voting Rights!

Members of Congress are in their home states from today until July 9th. While home, it is critical that they hear from you about the importance of moving quickly to pass H.R.9/S.2703 without any harmful amendments.

Here are a few points to make when talking with your representative and senators and educating your community about the Voting Rights Act:

  • The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy and the Voting Rights Act provides the legal basis to protect this right for all Americans. The Voting Rights Act is the most effective civil rights law ever passed.

  • While much of the Voting Rights Act is permanent, several of the Act’s key provisions will expire unless Congress acts to renew them. There is no time for further delay -- the time to act is now!

  • H.R.9/S.2703, The Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King Voting Rights Act and Reauthorization Act of 2006, is a bipartisan bill to renew and restore the Voting Rights Act. It is supported by Republicans and Democrats in both the House and Senate.

  • *****Congress must act quickly to pass H.R.9/S.2703, and must make sure it passes without any weakening amendments.*****
