Tell Your Representatives to Support Democracy for All Americans
September 7, 2006 - Washington D.C. residents, like all American citizens, pay federal income taxes, serve on juries, and die in wars to defend American democracy. But did you know that they do not currently have voting representation in Congress? Like you, D.C. residents are concerned about health care, education, crime, terrorism, housing and other issues that are debated in Congress. Yet they are denied a full voice in that debate. Congress now has a chance to change this - with your help.
The D.C. Voting Rights Act (H.R. 5388) would give the District of Columbia its first-ever voting member in the U.S. House of Representatives. A long-awaited hearing is scheduled for the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution at 2:00 PM on September 14, 2006. This hearing is an important next step for advancing this bipartisan legislation. A fundamental value of our nation's democracy is at stake. At such a critical moment as this, we must continue the nationwide momentum and urge Congress to stand up and take notice of this pressing civil rights issue! Congress needs to hear from you!
