On September 17, in Washington, DC, civil rights and disability advocates joined employers on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to celebrate the congressional passage of the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Amendments Act and to urge the president to sign it into law.
Join us in calling on President Bush to quickly sign the ADA Amendments Act into law!
The original ADA did for people with disabilities what the Civil Rights Act of 1964 did for communities of color – safeguarded their civil rights and protected them from discrimination. But in recent years, narrow court interpretations have rolled back ADA protections against workplace discrimination and stripped coverage for individuals with diabetes, epilepsy, and even cancer. The ADA Amendments Act corrects these court interpretations and restores the intent of the law.
There is strong bipartisan support for the ADA Amendments Act. Both chambers of Congress voted overwhelmingly to pass the bill. Employers, civil rights and disability leaders have formed an uncommon alliance around this critical legislative fix.
