WHAT: DC Voting Rights March
WHEN: April 16th, D.C. Emancipation Day, is a city-wide holiday commemorating the day in 1862 that President Lincoln freed enslaved people here in Washington, D.C. We can think of no more appropriate day to come together and demand the vote for the more than 600,000 residents who live in our nation’s capital!
Full Schedule of Events:
1:45pm – Bells ring for 15 minutes at Old Post Office Pavilion 2:00pm – Entertainment/activities on Freedom Plaza 2:30pm – Gather at Freedom Plaza (13th St. & Penn. Ave. NW) for a pre-rally on steps of Wilson Building (facing Freedom Plaza) 3pm – DC Mayor Adrian Fenty launches the march to the Capitol 4pm – “Demand the Vote” rally begins at the Capitol Reflecting Pool (3rd St. & Independence Ave NW)
WHO: The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR) is working with DC Vote, numerous coalition partners, and the office of Mayor Adrian Fenty to host what we hope will be the largest demonstration for D.C. voting rights in history! We will be joined by thousands of citizen activists...and you!
WHERE: Marchers will gather at Freedom Plaza and march to the capitol. (click here for map)
The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights will be meeting at 2:15 p.m. at 1275 Pennsylvania Ave (the corner of 13th & Pennsylvania) in front of the CVS Pharmacy. Look for the large LCCR banner that will help us find one another and begin marching together as members of the civil rights coalition. Otherwise, you are welcome to join at any of the other portions of the program and march along the way!
WHY: We will be marching for voting representation right in Congress’ backyard – making it impossible for them to ignore the overwhelming amount of excitement, momentum and passion around the issue of DC voting rights.
