Take the Pledge to Oppose the Michigan Anti-Affirmative Action Ballot Initiative

On November 7, Michigan voters will decide the fate of the so-called “Michigan Civil Rights Initiative” (MCRI), the anti-affirmative action ballot initiative proposing an amendment to the state constitution, sponsored by California businessman Ward Connerly. Connerly's MCRI would end equal opportunity and affirmative action initiatives in higher education, employment, and contracting in Michigan.  Recent polls show that once voters are educated about the intent and potential consequences of MCRI, they will likely oppose the constitutional amendment. Take the pledge to oppose this so-called civil rights initiative. Simply read the pledge below, fill out your information in the form on the right, and click "submit". Join voices with the countless others who have taken the pledge to protect affirmative action!

Subject: The Pledge to Oppose Ward Connerly's Anti-Affirmative Action Ballot Initiative

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

We, the undersigned, pledge to oppose the so-called "Michigan Civil Rights Initiative" (MCRI). MCRI would end equal opportunity and affirmative action initiatives in higher education, employment, and contracting in Michigan.

This initiative is divisive. In 2001 the Supreme Court upheld the consideration of race as one of many factors in higher education admissions.

We pledge to support the local coalition in Michigan, One United Michigan/Michigan United (OUM/MU), with their public education campaign to educate voters on the benefits of affirmative action and equal opportunity initiatives, and the potential consequences of MCRI. In solidarity with the local coalition, we pledge to forward this e-mail to others, especially those in Michigan, so that they are also aware of the attempts to rollback affirmative action and equal opportunity initiatives in Michigan.

Background Information

The Michigan Civil Rights Commission has issued a report charging that the MCRI misled voters who signed the petitions for qualifying the initiative. This report follows hearings held throughout the state, which were conducted by the Commission for the purposes of collecting affidavits from voters. In December, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled to certify Ward Connerly's so-called "Michigan Civil Rights Initiative" (MCRI), placing the anti-affirmative action initiative on the 2006 general election ballot.

Connerly's MCRI would end equal opportunity and affirmative action initiatives in higher education, employment, and contracting in Michigan. Connerly is best known as the businessman and former University of California regent who successfully led anti-affirmative action ballot initiatives Proposition 209 in California (1996) and Initiative 200 in Washington (1998). Following the Grutter v. Bollinger decision (2003), where the Supreme Court upheld the consideration of race as one of many factors in higher education admissions, Connerly and affirmative action opponents took their campaign to Michigan.

One United Michigan/Michigan United (OUM/MU), a diverse and growing coalition of more than 60 mainstream Michigan organizations representing women's groups, educators, business groups, religious organizations, racial and ethnic minority groups, and labor, has developed a public education campaign to educate voters on the benefits of affirmative action and equal opportunity programs, and the potential consequences of Connerly's initiative.
