Katrina Anniversary Pledge

Katrina Showed Us That Disaster Strikes the Poor the Hardest

Take Action: Sign the Pledge to End Poverty Now!

A year ago, Katrina uncovered an issue that many Americans forgot—that millions of us live in poverty in the wealthiest nation in the world.  As we near the celebration of Labor Day, we must remember those individuals, especially in the Gulf Coast, who are prevented from working and are living a life of poverty with lack of economic opportunity, inadequate supply of affordable housing, and unequal access to quality health care.

Many American workers are living in poverty in the Gulf Coast areas and nationwide. In fact, across the country, approximately 2.9 million people living below the poverty line are full-time workers. The effects of living in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty – the inability to get home and business loans, bad schools, poor access to health care, homelessness and substandard housing, etc. – affect all residents of those neighborhoods, not just those living below the poverty line themselves.

Hurricane Katrina brought the attention of the media and the American public to the tragedy of extreme poverty in both cities and rural areas throughout the country.  Take action to support a working agenda to end poverty!

Subject: I Will Not forget. I'm Taking Action to End Poverty Now!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

We, the undersigned, pledge our support for a working agenda to end poverty. Despite best efforts, workers on the Gulf Coast and the millions nationwide continue to live in poverty. Approximately 2.9 million people living below the poverty line are full-time workers.

We pledge our support for providing access to meaningful economic opportunities, addressing barriers to quality education and affordable housing, and providing quality health care for all individuals.

In solidarity with people across the country, we pledge to forward this pledge to others so that they are also aware of the economic, educational, housing, and health care disparities that exist in the gulf coast areas and nationwide.

Background Information

According to a new report from the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund, we know that in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina:

  • More than 81,000 business were impacted by the storms, costing the Gulf Coast region nearly 450,000 jobs.

  • Only 49 percent of New Orleans’ bus routes have reopened, with only 17 percent of the buses operational, affecting many of the poor in New Orleans who depend on public transportation in order to work.

  • There are only four counties in the U.S. where a person working full-time at minimum wage can afford the average rent on a one-bedroom apartment.

  • Nationwide, adults living below the poverty line are more than 62 percent more likely to have no source of consistent health care.
