Tell Your Representatives to Support Democracy for All Americans

September 7, 2006 - Washington D.C. residents, like all American citizens, pay federal income taxes, serve on juries, and die in wars to defend American democracy. But did you know that they do not currently have voting representation in Congress?  Like you, D.C. residents are concerned about health care, education, crime, terrorism, housing and other issues that are debated in Congress. Yet they are denied a full voice in that debate. Congress now has a chance to change this - with your help.

The D.C. Voting Rights Act (H.R. 5388) would give the District of Columbia its first-ever voting member in the U.S. House of Representatives. A long-awaited hearing is scheduled for the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution at 2:00 PM on September 14, 2006. This hearing is an important next step for advancing this bipartisan legislation. A fundamental value of our nation's democracy is at stake. At such a critical moment as this, we must continue the nationwide momentum and urge Congress to stand up and take notice of this pressing civil rights issue!  Congress needs to hear from you!

Subject: Support the DC Voting Rights Act (H.R. 5388)

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

While we work to secure democracy and civil and human rights around the world, we must also provide that same rights to Americans living in our nation's capital. I am appalled to learn that while we are engaging in these important activities worldwide, the people who live in our capital city are not afforded those same rights. DC residents pay federal income taxes, serve on juries, and die in wars to defend American democracy, but they do not have voting representation in Congress.

For these reasons, I urge you to help provide Americans living in Washington, D.C. with representation in Congress by actively supporting the DC Voting Rights Act (H.R. 5388).

The D.C. Voting Rights Act (H.R. 5388), an act that will give the District of Columbia its first voting member in the U.S. House of Representatives, is scheduled for a hearing before the Judiciary Subcommittee on Thursday, September 14, 2006. Your support is needed to help move this legislation quickly toward passage.

I believe that DC residents deserve full voting representation in Congress and that the DC Voting Rights Act (H.R. 5388) is an excellent and necessary first step. Please support this critical civil rights legislation to ensure democracy for all Americans.

Sincerely,

Background Information

The D.C. Voting Rights Act (H.R. 1433) would:

  • Give the District of Columbia its first voting member in the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • Give the state of Utah a fourth vote in the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • Create these two new seats in the House by temporarily raising the number of Representatives from 435 to 437. After the 2010 U.S. Census reapportionment, the number of House seats would return to 435 with D.C. retaining a full vote in the House.

The D.C. Voting Rights Act ensures the same democracy for the many citizens living in our nation's capital. It is an important first step in securing the fair and equal representation of all Americans. Congress must hear from you!
